After throwing out numerous hints at its development since 2017, Rolls-Royce has officially confirmed that it will be debuting its first model to plunge into electrification on September 29, 2021. It could be called the Silent Shadow since its parent company BMW had filed a patent for this name back in 2020. Also, the carmaker used to retail the Silver Shadow sedan from 1965-1980.
While details are still scarce, Rolls-Royce CEO Torsten Mueller-Oetvoes hinted earlier that it’ll be made from the ground up. The carmaker also clarified that their first electric model will be a battery electric vehicle, not a hybrid.
We’re yet to have a gander at how the new EV will look like, but the Vision Next 100 (103EX) electric concept revealed back in 2016 could give some clues on its design. The concept is sleek, and gets bulbous fenders which honour retro Rolls-Royce models. It’s also got a single-door entry which bifurcates into a suicide door and a gullwing door for easy ingress and egress. Level 5 autonomous mobility may hint at some nifty technology onboard the new electric vehicle.
Expect more details on Rolls-Royce’s first electric vehicle to surface at the unveiling. The carmaker is likely to showcase the new EV in pre-production form first before a proper unit shows up.
